Car Seats Save Lives
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death and injuries among children ages 1 – 13. Car seats decrease the risk of fatal injury by about 50% or more for all children when used properly.
It’s the Law
According to the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 46.61.687, children must be secured in a restraint appropriate for their age and size. Follow your seat manufacturer’s height and weight limits.
- Kids less than 8 years old must be secured in some form of child safety system unless the child is 4 feet 9 inches or taller and the seat belt fits correctly.
- Kids older than 8 years old or taller than 4 feet 9 inches must ride with a secure seat belt. If the seat belt does not fit correctly the child must remain in a child restraint regardless of height or weight.
- Children under the age of 13 years old should ride in the backseat whenever it is practical.
Proper Installation Is Key
The safest way for a child to ride in a car is in a properly fitted and installed car seat. A nationwide field study has shown that 45% of all car seats are installed or used incorrectly. Caregivers should consider the following when choosing a proper car seat for a child:
- Age
- Weight
- Height
- Developmental Level
Both the car seat and vehicle manual should always be read and followed when installing a car seat.
