South King Fire and Rescue conducts the fire plan review and inspection of new construction and tenant improvements in commercial occupancies. The review process includes but is not limited to pre-application meetings with the Cities of Des Moines and Federal Way, location of fire hydrants, fire department access to all new developments and structures, building permit review and review of fire systems within the structure. Questions regarding the fire review process should be directed to the Fire Marshal's Office (253) 946-7248.
Inspection requests for fire systems shall be made 24 hours in advance by calling (253) 946-7318.
City of Des Moines
The City of Des Moines processes all permit applications for building, fire hydrant availability and fire systems. These applications are routed through the Fire Marshal's Office for review. In most cases the review time is not more than two weeks. All plans shall be submitted at the Building Department Office at:

A Fire Hydrant Availability (PDF) form is required for all new construction and additions. The form shall be turned in to the City of Des Moines Building Department along with a plot plan drawn to scale indicating the addresses of adjoining properties and a Water Availability Certificate that shall be obtained from the appropriate Water District.

Unincorporated King County
A Fire District Receipt is required for new construction permits submitted to King County Department of Development and Environmental Services. A Fire District receipt must be obtained in person for new construction within the boundaries of South King Fire and Rescue. The receipts can be obtained at Federal Way City Hall, Community Development, 33325 8th Avenue South, Federal Way, Washington.
King County Department of Development and Environmental Services is the authority having jurisdiction for all permits in the unincorporated areas of South King Fire and Rescue. Fire Systems design
Fire sprinkler systems shall be designed and installed in accordance with the following design criteria:
Sprinkler plans, hydraulic calculations, and check lists shall bear the Certificate of Competency stamp of a currently licensed sprinkler contractor per RCW 18.160.
