Pre-Kindergarten

South King Fire & Rescue provides the "Play Safe! Be Safe!" curriculum to pre-schools and daycares for instruction. After completion of the units, the pre-school can schedule either an engine visit or a station tour as a reward for the student's hard work. Please call 253-946-7246 to request a kit and 253-946-7337 to schedule a tour or engine visit.

Elementary School

Fire department personnel teach a fire and life safety curriculum to all kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms in the Des Moines and Federal Way area.

Kindergarten students learn basic behaviors such as "stop, drop and roll" and "don't touch matches and lighters, and "give matches and lighters to a grown-up."

First grade students are taught how to escape buildings and the importance of school and home fire drills.

At the second grade level, students review the basic fire safety skills and explore the science behind them.

In third grade students learn how to identify fire hazards and how to prevent fires and injuries at home and in school.

Students learn how to call 911 and activate the Emergency Medical Services in the fourth grade.

In the fifth grade, students learn the reality of fire and smoke as well as the consequences of playing with fire.

High School

Statistics show that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of Emergency Medical Services responses in King County. Furthermore, the 15-19 year-old age group has the highest incidence of crashes for all age groups. Many of these crashes are caused by excessive speed and/or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

To address this trend, and try to prevent teen and young adult motor vehicle crashes, the department teaches a program called "Think Again." It is an "in-the classroom" program targeted at high school students. The program is taught by South King Fire & Rescue's Firefighter- Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's), and includes a candid discussion on 'driving under the influence' situations and seat belt use, as well as an explanation of what typically happens to the human body during and after motor vehicle crashes. Instructor anecdotes, actual medical equipment and graphic DUI photographs are included in the course.
