About Us

South King Fire & Rescue (SKF&R) was officially established on January 1, 2006. SKF&R joined the existing resources from the Federal Way Fire Department and King County Fire District #26 Des Moines to provide fire services to the communities of Des Moines, Federal Way, and adjoining Unincorporated King County. South King Fire & Rescue provides modern, progressive and professional services to approximately 150,000 citizens residing throughout the 42 square miles. South King Fire & Rescue is comprised of 160 full time staff. It is expected that SKF&R will respond to over 17,000, 9-1-1 incidents yearly. South King Fire & Rescue provides the following high quality fire, rescue and EMS services:

Who we are

South King Fire & Rescue is comprised of 160 dedicated fire service professionals. As the community that we serve is made up of a diverse population, our department strives to incorporate diversity within its ranks. Our service area includes the entire Cities of Federal Way and Des Moines; portions of the Cities of Auburn and Normandy Park; and a portion of unincorporated King County. We remain a stand-alone fire district operating under the auspices of Title 52 of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW), with both the cities of Federal Way and Des Moines having annexed into our district for ongoing service many years ago.

The organization of South King Fire and Rescue has several divisions: Administration; Fire Marshals Office, Emergency Management and Public Education, Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, Training and Safety, and Support Services. Other services provided by SKF&R are: hazardous materials mitigation, technical rescue mitigation, and marine rescue service.

Strategic Leadership Plan:

SKF&R was one of the first fire districts in Washington State to have a living Strategic Leadership Plan. It was created in 2001 by a joint committee representing all the facets of this organization and adopted by the SKF&R Board of Fire Commissioners in November of 2001. The plan is evaluated annually and is visited quarterly during the each year to make sure that the organization is still on course to accomplish its goals.
